Italy has been influential at a coinage point of view: the florin,
one of the most used coinage types in European history, It was struck in Florence in the 13th century and for centuries, Italy has been
divided into many city-states, but when the country became unified in 1861, the Italian lira came into place, and it was used until 2002.Today, Since
January 1st 2002, Italy
is using the euro currency.
On New Year’s Day 2002, Italy, like the other
11 members of the Euro zone, started using Euro notes and Euro coins for cash
transactions. Within a few months, the old coins and banknotes in Lire have
been withdrawn.
